Medical Massage Therapy
What is Medical Massage?
Medical massage is used when a doctor has diagnosed you with a condition and prescribed massage treatments. It employs only those massage techniques which are evidence based and accepted by the medical community. Types of treatments are determined after a thorough assessment of your overall health and your specific condition has been completed.
It also includes working closely with other members of your healthcare team, such as your doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, surgeon, etc. as well as coordination with other professionals such as lawyers, insurance agents, etc. as needed.
What is an assessment?
In order to determine which treatment options are best for your condition a thorough assessment is conducted. It usually takes about 30 minutes (no charge for this) and is done before your initial treatment and any subsequent re-evaluations.
It begins with a general medical review of your current health, such as what medication you’re currently taking, your level of physical activity, description of your pain, review of any recent tests (x-rys, MRI, CT scan) etc. Also included is a discussion of your health history such as previous sprains, strains, broken bones, etc.
This is followed by a orthopedic functional assessment which looks at your posture, the tightness of your muscles, your range of motion, strength of individual muscles, and any special tests as needed.
All of this helps to zero in one your on your specific condition which then helps determine which treatment options are best for you.
What to expect
Many different massage techniques might be employed during a medical massage. You might be asked to reposition yourself several times doing the treatment. You might also be asked to stretch a certain muscle or tighten one while it is being massaged. Expect to be a little more of a participant than in most non-medical massages.
How do I know if it’s right for me?
This is determined by your doctor. Discuss your condition with your healthcare provider and ask if medical massage is appropriate for you.
If you plan to have insurance cover your treatments please note:
They will reject claims using the regular written prescriptions from doctors because they lack enough information for approval. To get the correct form contact me. Then take it to your healthcare provider for completion.
